Interested in a Career in Cybersecurity? Try These Incredible Resources
Earlier this week, as part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we had the privilege of speaking to Andrew Thompson, Cyber Security Analyst with our good friends at Kagool. He told us all about his motivation for entering the industry, what a day in the life looks like and why you might want to consider following the same path.
In case you missed it, you can read all about it here.
Our conversation with Andrew didn’t stop there, however, and he provided an indispensable selection of resources that will prove valuable not only to those considering a cybersec career but anyone that seeks a greater understanding of one of information technology’s fastest-growing sectors.
Remember, most careers involve an element of cybersecurity. Even if you’ve only been required to sign an email usage policy at work, you’re already got one foot in the industry!
So, let’s take a look at the educational cybersecurity resources recommended by the experts!
9 Indispensable Resources to Learn More About Cybersecurity
- Read and explore the OWASP Top Ten to understand more about the most critical security risks to web applications – https://owasp.org/www-project-top-ten/.
- Vulnerabilities are often categorised using the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) to rank their severity. Learn more about that scoring system – https://www.first.org/cvss/.
- Follow the PortSwigger Academy to learn more about web security and to test out some of the most common vulnerabilities – https://portswigger.net/web-security.
- Practice web application penetration skills through the OWASP Juice Shop training – https://elements.heroku.com/buttons/bkimminich/juice-shop.
- Get more hands on by testing your hacking skills through sites such as TryHackMe (https://tryhackme.com/) or Hack The Box (https://www.hackthebox.com/).
- The MITRE ATT&CK Framework is used within cyber security to better spot cyber attacks. Have a look at some of their official training modules – https://attack.mitre.org/resources/training/cti/.
- Sign-up for cyber security newsletters to keep up to date on the latest attacks and vulnerabilities. There are many resources out there, including from the top cyber security vendors, but some of the ones I use include:
- Explore YouTube – it is an excellent resource for all sorts of cybersecurity information.
- Microsoft offers learning and free entry to some of their exams, including their SC-900 certification, to students (those of us that are no longer students have to pay for exam entry!). Take advantage of this – https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/certifications/student-training-and-certification. AWS also offer free training – https://aws.amazon.com/training/learn-about/security/.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Andrew for his incredible contributions to our work during Cybersecurity Awareness Month and for providing young people with an authentic insight into an incredibly exciting career path.
